The Many Lives of SXM - Virtual Exhibition by Raymond Bowen
The digital artist St Martiner unveils his new series, "The Many Lives of St Martin," in a unique virtual exhibition that is not to be missed!
Discover the โFuture St Martinโ through a collection of dystopian illustrations that reimagine the islandโs landmarks (Fort Louis, the airport, the border monument, etc.) with a mix of optimism and irony, particularly in terms of sustainable development.
St Martiner presents his brand-new illustrations in a futuristic, temporary virtual exhibition that can only be viewed online! The virtual exhibition, "The Many Lives of St Martin," is open to everyone from October 1 to October 31, 2024, accessible 24/7 for free on explr.sx, an innovative platform for artists.
This exhibition, hosted exclusively on the digital platform explr.sx, showcases a collection of digital images inspired by a potential "future development project," similar to the large billboards often found at construction sites. Just like real estate developers who depict their future projects in 3D illustrations, St Martiner offers an alternative and engaged vision of what some of the islandโs key locations might becomeโboth wondrous and precariously fragile.

Among the most striking works are a river for kayaking in place of the lovely wooded ascent of the Almond Grove neighborhood in Cole Bay, a space station named โPrincess Juliana,โ and a water park surrounding Fort Louis. These works encourage reflection on the environmental risks we face, such as deforestation and flooding, while raising questions like: What is the balance between progress and sustainable development on our small island? How might our individual ambitions shape the islandโs future, for better or worse, when we play with nature?
โThis exhibition is my interpretation of what St Martin might becomeโitโs the result of an observation weโve all probably had, to varying degrees, without necessarily attaching much importance to it or recognizing it as our own. The interactive online format is also interesting from an ecological standpoint. Through these illustrations, I invite the public to think, even for just a brief moment, about the islandโs future while reimagining its immense possibilities.โ - St Martiner
As a reminder, the exhibition is entirely free, accessible online, and invites users of all ages to explore it on their smartphones, tablets, and/or computers. The temporary virtual exhibition is part of the new interactive platform explr.sx, which provides cultural, historical, and environmental resources about Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten, with the goal of preserving and showcasing the rich heritage of our island.
