Throwback To The 19th Century!
The Rue de la République, called Gran’Rue in Creole, is the main street into the capital. It is easily recognizable from the refined traditional architecture of some of the large houses bordering its sidewalks.
Dating back to the 19th century, these large houses were built in the Traditional Colonial Style and have been untouched since. Some have been restored, more or less to their original splendor, like the more modern Dauphin Telecom shop, or the old Roland Richardson Art Gallery with its beautiful indoor patio, sadly now closed to the public.
Other traditional big houses display the tragic effects of time and violent climatic events. Still, they are standing to this present day, and inspire the wanderer of another time in human history, when architecture was more about the people who actually lived in it than about profit and short-term interest.
