Mont des Accords: The 1648 Partition Agreement

Mont des Accords Partition

Mont des Accords, a hill located near the center of St. Martin, is historically significant as the site where the famous partition agreement between the Dutch and French was signed on March 23, 1648.

This treaty effectively divided the island into two parts, with the northern section becoming French Saint Martin and the southern part becoming Dutch Sint Maarten.

The agreement was a peaceful resolution to the competing claims of the two nations and has endured for centuries, making St. Martin the smallest landmass shared by two sovereign states. The partition laid the foundation for the island’s dual identity, which continues to influence its culture, politics, and economy today.
