World War II on St. Martin
During World War II, St. Martin experienced a brief but significant period of Vichy French control. Following the capitulation of Holland to Germany, the French side of the island came under Vichy control, and the island was blockaded by Allied forces to prevent German U-boats from using its harbors.
Although spared from direct conflict, the war years were marked by tension and uncertainty. This period highlighted the island’s strategic importance in the Caribbean and its vulnerability during global conflicts.
