Tobacco, St. Martin’s Specialty
From a book* written in 1658 by Rev. Charles de Rochefort (1605-1683), a Walloon minister who had visited St. Martin-St. Maarten, we learn that tobacco from here was far more esteemed than that of any other island! For that matter, tobacco cultivation was considered the most profitable commerce for settlers.
