A Naturalized Islander; Aloe Vera
Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) is a favorite of St Martin gardens!
The short-stemmed succulent grows wildly around the island though it is typically found near beaches where it can directly be put to good use in case of sun damage to skin.
Native to North Africa, the plant was introduced in the Caribbean during the 19th century. Aloe has adapted well to Caribbean climate and today, the plant is right at home in St. Martin’s dry coastal forests.
