St. Martin looks very hilly doesn’t it?

This is actually a trick of nature!

Most of the relief of St-Martin come from consecutive intrusions following a volcanic thrust across the “Anguilla bank”. This is what created the central framework in the shape of a large “X” on which most of the highest hills are aligned. Altogether, they end up looking like lines of  rocky ridges.

These hills are not so high but the slopes are very steep, which is what gives the topography of the island the appearance of an important mountain range with numerous valleys…but in appearance only 😉
