Fort William: Hilltop Fortress
Fort William, perched on a hill overlooking Philipsburg and Great Bay, was built in 1801 by the British during their occupation of St. Maarten. This fort served as a defensive stronghold against potential French invasions and played a significant role in the military history of the island. Although the fort has been largely dismantled, its location offers breathtaking views of the bay and the town below, making it a popular spot for visitors interested in both history and scenic vistas. The remaining ruins of Fort William stand as a reminder of the strategic importance of St. Maarten during the colonial era.
