Fort Amsterdam: The Dutch Stronghold

Fort Amsterdam: Dutch Stronghold

Fort Amsterdam, located on the peninsula at the entrance of Great Bay in Philipsburg, was the first fortification built by the Dutch on St. Maarten.

Constructed in 1631 by the West India Company, the fort was strategically positioned to protect the island’s valuable salt resources.

The Dutch recognized the economic potential of salt, which was essential for preserving food, and established Fort Amsterdam to secure their interests against rival European powers.

This stronghold played a central role in the early colonial history of St. Maarten, symbolizing the Dutch presence and their efforts to control the island’s resources.
