Bienvenue à Marigot!
The French Side capital boasts a rich history and is an important marker of St. Martin’s national heritage!
It is under the reign of Louis XVI of France (1754-1793) that, due to its rapid economic growth, Marigot was proclaimed capital of the French Side.
In 1789, Louis XVI commanded the construction of a fort, a prison, and a bridge in order to protect the port and commercial warehouses where local crops (salt, sugar cane, rum, coffee) were stored.
Today, main government buildings, administrations and banks are all located here in the town center. The maritime ferry station, the bus terminal and the strategic location of the capital close to the Dutch Side make it a main hub for locals and tourists alike.
