1819 Hurricane’s Impact
In 1819, a devastating hurricane struck St. Martin, causing widespread destruction across the island. The hurricane not only destroyed much of the island’s infrastructure but also wiped out almost all historical records, making it difficult to reconstruct certain aspects of St. Martin’s past.
This natural disaster significantly impacted the island’s economy and society, contributing to the decline of the plantation industry.
The rebuilding efforts that followed were monumental, as the islanders worked to restore their homes and communities in the aftermath of the catastrophe.
